Connection Matters Radio (CMR) has been selected by the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) to develop a new podcast series under the latter’s Your Community, Country and Council banner.

The focus of the series is to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Victorians to engage with local councils either at a community level and/or in nominating as a candidate in the 2020 Victorian local government elections.

Initially planned to be a series of videos, podcasts and one-to-many information sessions across Victoria, the onset of COVID-19 social distancing rules saw the project adapt to be a 12-episode podcast series.

In commenting on selecting CMR’s Charles Pakana to produce and host the podcast, VLGA CEO Kathryn Arndt said: “Charles is a highly respected Aboriginal journalist and has demonstrated many times that he has the interviewing skills and understanding of community and local government that are essential for success with the program.”

Cultural Guidance and Support

Supporting Charles and CMR in development of the podcast series is a think-tank of Aboriginal Victorians, all of whom have a great deal of experience in working in community and with local government authorities.

According to Charles, the think-tank support is critical to the project’s success. “Cultural guidance is fundamental to the appropriateness and correctness of content,” he said.

“My Aboriginal brothers and sisters who are supporting the project help ensure that we’re going out there with information that is relevant and helpful. All of us are committed to breaking down the ongoing barriers that exist between our people and the various levels of government.

“This project, we believe, will go a long way to achieving that goal.”

About CMR

CMR is the successor to Connection Matters, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander current affairs program that was produced and hosted by Charles Pakana in 2017 and 2018 and aired on 3KND. It is now an independent, self-funded and non-profit initiative aimed at promoting positive Aboriginal stories from across Victoria.
