With postal voting now open for the Victorian local government elections, Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) Chief-of-Staff Steve Cooper talks to Connection Matters Radio (CMR) about certain issues that should be of interest to all Victorian voters.
Steve, who has 40+ years of local government experience, first touched on the age-old myth that councils are responsible primarily for “roads, rates and rubbish.”
“I know in the city of Melbourne, on their website they talk about over 120 services,” he told CMR.
“I would’ve thought even the smallest council in Victoria would be in the range of 70 to 80 services; and that’s everything from the maintenance of infrastructure and assets, recreation services, human services from cradle to grave.”
Other key points discussed in this interview include:
- The potential impact resulting from rates being lowered
- The actual power of an individual councillor
- Challenges that face councils “dogged by infighting”
