Gunditjmara man, actor, playwright and director Tom Molyneux joined Connection Matters Radio (CMR) to talk about his ongoing work to use the stage as platform to spread truths about Australia’s history.
With his regionally-performed The Mission on hold until 2022 for its national touring schedule, Tom has already commenced work on his next project – a falsely accused, sentenced and hanged Aboriginal man named “Roger”.
“Roger was convicted of the murder of this white fella called Patrick Codd,” Tom told CMR.
“And there was a lot of dispute about the basic facts of the case. Whether Roger could actually even be placed at the location where this whitefella was murdered.
“And he had an identical looking brother and the whitefellas who were giving evidence, couldn’t really tell the difference between the brother and Roger.
In fact, one of the Chief Protectors of Aboriginal people as they were in those days wrote a letter to the court saying, “You can’t do this. Roger wasn’t there on the day. This is a miscarriage of justice.”et cetera.”
“It’s, again, one of those ones that we need to tell. Not many people would know this tale and it has to be told.”
