Overview

Throughout term four, Whittlesea youth aged 14 to 25 have the opportunity participate in online leadership and activity sessions being run by youth workers at the Whittlesea Council.

Barkindji and Yorta Yorta man Rex Taylor, a youth worker and program manager at the Council spoke to Connection Matters Radio about programs.

Prior to March, the programs were running at Council’s youth centre located at a major shopping centre.

“Moving online was obviously a huge shift for our young people, but as soon as the first lockdown came that’s when we transitioned to online, and we tried to make it as accessible as possible,” Rex told CMR.

“I’m trying to lean towards leadership with the older kids, just because I think we need a voice in the Whittlesea area. With the 14 to 18 year old group we’re going to be running over term four – I think there’s about 10 plus weeks in term four – and the kind of activities we will be doing are some cultural activities.

“So a lot of yarning. We talk about where we’re from. We always start like that with the acknowledgement as well. Just have a laugh and connect with each other, bring some stories in there about culture.”
